Car Battery FAQ

Where do your car batteries come from?
We source our batteries from trusted distributors and smaller scale manufacturers based on years of experience trying and testing different brands. Century Batteries only supplies batteries we are confident enough in to put our own label on whether it's for commercial equipment or your family car, you can expect longer service life out of batteries every time.

What warranty do your car batteries have?
We carry several battery lines with different warranty coverage levels. The exact warranty depends on the specific battery you choose, and we explain the coverage before purchase so you know exactly what to expect.

How do I know if my car battery is dying?
Most batteries don’t fail instantly — they weaken first. You may notice the engine cranking slower than normal, taking longer to start, or starting inconsistently. Modern vehicles may also show electrical symptoms such as warning lights, malfunctioning screens, or sensors behaving strangely because today’s cars are very sensitive to voltage. This becomes especially noticeable during colder mornings in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Port Coquitlam.

Why did my car battery die overnight?
A battery can fail suddenly due to an internal short or a failed cell. It can also be caused by lights being left on, a door not fully closed, a parasitic electrical draw, or a charging system issue. This is why testing is important — sometimes the battery is not the real problem.

My car starts sometimes but not others — is it the battery or alternator?
Intermittent starting can come from the battery, alternator, starter motor, or an electrical draw. The proper first step is always a battery load test. Ruling out the battery first prevents unnecessary replacement of expensive parts.

How long should a car battery last?
A good quality battery typically lasts five years or more, while lower quality batteries may only last around three years. Heat gradually wears batteries out internally, and cold weather simply exposes a battery that has already weakened. In the Fraser Valley, temperature swings between summer heat and winter cold tend to reveal aging batteries quickly.

Does cold weather damage batteries?
Cold weather doesn’t damage a battery by itself, but it requires more power to start an engine. The real damage usually happens during hot weather, which slowly degrades internal components. If there is an especially hot summer in the Lower Mainland (a.k.a. heat dome), more batteries will fail in the winter because they have been weakened by the heat.

Do I need the exact same battery type as before?
In newer vehicles, yes. AGM batteries must be replaced with AGM and flooded batteries with flooded. Using the wrong type can cause charging problems, warning lights, or computer system issues, especially in European vehicles. The safest approach is to match the manufacturer specifications using the vehicle information or the old battery, which we can check in-store.

What do CCA and CA mean?
CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps and measures starting power at very cold temperatures. CA measures starting power above freezing. Even though our winters are milder than the prairies, proper CCA still matters for reliable starts on cold mornings in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Port Coquitlam, especially if you are parking outside.

Can I install a higher CCA battery?
Yes. Your vehicle will only draw the power it needs, so extra CCA does not harm the electrical system and often improves winter starting reliability and battery lifespan.

What happens if I install the wrong battery size?
If the battery does not meet minimum specifications, the vehicle may struggle to start. If the battery type is incorrect, the charging system may overcharge or undercharge it and cause electronic issues. Proper fit and specification matter in modern vehicles.

Are expensive car batteries always better?
Not always. The best battery depends on the vehicle, driving habits, and climate. A higher price doesn’t automatically mean better performance for every application, which is why we recommend based on actual usage rather than cost.

Can I replace my car battery myself?
Yes, some people do, provided they have the right tools and feel comfortable working on their vehicle. Most people prefer that someone installs the battery for them. Our teams offer car battery installation for customers who prefer not to handle it themselves at our Abbotsford, Chilliwack, or Port Coquitlam locations.

Will replacing my battery reset my car settings?
It can. Without a memory saver device, some vehicles may reset radio presets, clock settings, and certain learned engine parameters.

Do you install car batteries and how long does it take?
Yes, we install car batteries. Most installations take about ten to twenty minutes, while some vehicles that require removing covers or components may take longer or require an appointment.

What should I do with my old battery?
Car batteries must be recycled. They are about 98% recyclable, and the materials are reused to manufacture new batteries and other products. A refundable deposit applies if the old battery is not returned, so bringing it back saves money and helps the environment.

Can you test my battery before I buy one?
Yes, and we recommend it. A quick load test shows whether the battery is actually failing or if the problem comes from the alternator, starter, or another electrical issue. This helps avoid replacing a battery unnecessarily, and we provide this service in-store.

How can I make my battery last longer?
Drive the vehicle regularly and keep the battery charged. If the vehicle sits often, using a maintenance charger periodically can significantly extend battery life.

Does short driving damage batteries?
Frequent short trips slowly discharge the battery because the alternator doesn’t have enough time to recharge it. Over time this can cut the lifespan in half. Occasional longer drives — such as highway driving around the Fraser Valley — help maintain a full charge.

Do dash cams and accessories drain batteries?
Yes. Accessories that draw power while the vehicle is parked can gradually drain the battery, especially in modern vehicles with many electronics.

Should I replace my battery before winter?
If the battery is four to five years old, replacement is usually a safe choice before colder weather arrives. A battery test can estimate remaining capacity and help you decide.

What should I do if my battery dies?
You can jump start it, charge it, or replace it, but testing afterward is important to confirm why it failed. We offer quick battery testing to determine the cause.

Is boosting a car bad for the battery?
No, as long as it is done properly. Reversing the connections can damage the battery and vehicle electronics, so correct procedure matters.

Why does my new battery keep dying?
If a new battery dies repeatedly, the issue is usually elsewhere, such as a parasitic electrical draw, alternator problem, starter issue, or a malfunctioning component that continues to use power while the vehicle is off.
